The International Birnstiel Award of Doctoral Research in Molecular Life Sciences has identified six outstanding young researchers who have made ground-breaking contributions to the research in the field of molecular life sciences. The award was named in his honor, as an annual award of the Max Birnstiel Foundation and the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP Vienna) to commemorate the upcoming generations of scientific preeminence and creativity in the world scientific community.
Celebrating Excellence in Molecular Life Sciences
The International Birnstiel Award is one of the markers of the excellence of doctoral research in molecular life sciences since its foundation in 2019. The award recognizes no more than six exceptional PhD students annually with innovative, rigorous, and transformative research.
The award was the 7th year of its operation and had 87 nominations of major institutions all over the world. Out of this very competitive arena, six outstanding researchers were chosen based on their innovative work that stretches the limits of the knowledge on cellular and molecular biology.
Meet the 2025 Birnstiel Award Laureates
The 2025 Birnstiel Award recipients represent a truly international cohort of emerging scientific leaders:
These young scientists have made significant advances in areas ranging from molecular signaling and cellular mechanisms to genetic regulation and disease modeling. Their diverse research showcases the depth and global scope of innovation in molecular life sciences research today.
A Platform for Recognition and Inspiration
The awardees will be invited to speak at the Birnstiel Award Ceremony that takes place every year at IMP Vienna, during which the research success of the awardee will be made known to an international community of biologists and molecular researchers. All the laureates will be given a trophy, certificate and a EUR2,000 prize, endowed by the Max Birnstiel Foundation and IMP.
In addition to the recognition, the Birnstiel Award seeks to promote a mentorship and collaboration culture among young scientists, which will give them visibility and networking to their careers to launch them into academia and beyond.
Strengthening Global Scientific Innovation
The Birnstiel Award 2025 supports the worldwide cooperation in the development of the molecular life sciences by recognizing doctoral researchers of various backgrounds and institutions. The investment of Max Birnstiel Foundation and IMP Vienna in developing young scientific talent remains an inspiration to the human race in raising a generation of scientists who were interested in the most basic form of life.
With the seventh year of operation of the award, it restates its mission to take care of the upcoming scientists whose efforts define the future of biomedical discovery and innovation.
