One of the most renowned awards of doctoral excellence, the IEEE Portugal Section has just presented the winner of the Best PhD Thesis Award 2025. The award honours exceptional PhD research, which has shown excellence, scholarly strength as well as high possibilities of practical application in engineering and technology.
Dr. Mohsen Barzeger received the 2025 Best PhD Thesis Award for his remarkable graduate work. He earned his PhD from the instituto Superior Technico, one of portugal’s most famous engineering institutes, and is well known for the intellectual rigour and practical value of his work.
The doctoral thesis of Dr. Barzegar is called Damage Imaging in Guided Wave-based Inspection of Adhesive Joints and the given topic is one of the key issues in the area of structural health monitoring and non-destructive evaluation. His study aims at enhancing the inspection methods on adhesive joints that are extensively used in aerospace, automobile, and civil engineering buildings.
The thesis will help to ensure a more precise detection of the hidden damage in the bonded structures, improving safety, reliability, and efficiency of their maintenance by the further development of guided wave-based imaging techniques. The book is very applicable in academia and industry since it provides the interrelationship between theoretical modelling and practical engineering work.
In the IEEE Portugal Section award, submissions were evaluated by the IEEE Portugal Section award committee according to originality, methodological strengths, scientific impact and societal/industrial impact. What was unique in the thesis presented by Dr.Barzegar was its innovative character, technical maturity, and obvious prospect of whether it could be implemented into engineering systems in practice. The committee observed that the research improves the contemporary knowledge and also provides practical solutions to the prevailing inspection difficulties in intricate buildings.
