One of the most desirable awards in the microbiology fields is the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) Lifetime Achievement Award, and the winner of this award is known biochemist Dr. Jennifer A. Doudna. This award is given due to her outstanding career which was marked by discoveries, scientific leadership over time and lifetime contribution to the world.

Dr. Doudna is widely recognized all over the world as a result of her work in the invention of CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology, which is a revolutionary technology that enables the easy manipulation of the DNA. It has been one of the innovations that have brought a revolution in the field of genetics, medicine, agriculture and biotechnology research. Doudna received a 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry together with a co-author Emmanuelle Charpentier, in recognition of this historic breakthrough.

The ASM Lifetime Achievement Award is awarded to scientists who have contributed to the development of the microbial sciences in some way or in another during a career. The recipients are chosen after a stringent process of peer-review during which the research excellence, mentorship and service to the scientific community is assessed. The choice of Doudna underscores her sustained contribution to the theoretical and applied studies in the field of biology.

In addition to CRISPR, the research by Doudna has advanced the biology of RNA and gene control to a greater extent. Her writings have formed the basis of new treatment strategies to genetic illnesses, faster drugs discovery, as well as, facilitation of innovative solutions in the realms of life sciences across the world.

Doudna is also popular in terms of her leadership in the ethical debate on genome editing. She has led the best research practices and international relationships by pointing out the importance of providing ethical behavior in a dynamic paradigm of genetic technologies.

Currently Dr. Doudna is a renowned professor at University of California, Berkeley, and an investigator at Howard Hughes Medical institute.  She has also established the Innovative Genomics Institute that unites the interdisciplinary teams to transform science into practice.

ASM leadership lauded Doudna as a life long devotee of scientific excellence and mentorship. Her work still inspires the generation of researchers of various disciplines and generations to change the future of microbiology and biotechnology.

It is with this accolade that Jennifer Doudna becomes a part of an elite number of scientists whose ingenuity and integrity have marked the modern sciences of life to solidify her mark as one of the most influential scientific leaders of our era.
