On July 1, 2024, Maurie McInnis began a new chapter in her remarkable career by becoming the 24th President of Yale University. Her appointment marks not only a significant milestone in Yale’s storied history but also a continuation of her lifelong dedication to higher education, leadership, and scholarship.
For more than three decades, President McInnis has balanced two worlds one as a respected academic and researcher, and the other as a transformative leader at some of the nation’s most distinguished institutions. Her journey to Yale reflects both her deep intellectual curiosity and her ability to navigate the evolving challenges of higher education with resilience and vision.
An award-winning scholar, McInnis has explored the complex intersections of art, culture, and slavery in the American South. Through her books, exhibitions, and archival projects, she has brought new insights to the ways art and politics shape collective memory and identity. Her scholarship has not only enriched academic discourse but also connected deeply with broader conversations on history, justice, and representation.

Before arriving at Yale, McInnis served as the sixth president of Stony Brook University, where her leadership left a profound impact. At Stony Brook, she guided both the university and its expansive medical system Stony Brook Medicine comprising five health sciences schools, four hospitals, and more than 200 community-based healthcare facilities.
Her tenure was marked by bold strategic initiatives that strengthened Stony Brook’s reputation as a hub of innovation, research, and healthcare delivery. By expanding access to medical services and advancing interdisciplinary education, she built bridges between academia and the community, ensuring the university’s work touched lives far beyond campus.
Prior to Stony Brook, McInnis also served as provost and executive vice president at the University of Texas at Austin, where she shaped academic priorities, faculty development, and student success initiatives at one of the largest universities in the nation.
