The recipients of the said award have made an exceptional contribution towards social justice and equality in education for at least four years.
It honors the transformation that Dr. Valenzuela’s scholarship, community leadership and moral advocacy in support of better educational prospects among long-neglected communities have progressed.
Dr. Valenzuela received this honor, however, for the remarkable nature of the contribution because she has been working in the field of education and striving for justice and equal rights of Mexican American students and students from other minority groups over the past three decades. Actually, she has always worked to make education policies culture-sensitive during her impressive career.
Furthermore, even though she studied educational inequalities, Dr. Valenzuela helped all students succeed regardless of their cultural and social background.
Dr. Valenzuela is a scholar with an established record of impact on scholarship in Latino education, youth empowerment, educational equity and social justice. Her research has heavily influenced national discussions on education reform and practices in culturally sustaining instruction.
Outside of academia she exhibited excellent community leadership through work with educators, advocacy groups, policymakers and the local community to promote real change in education.
One pillar of Dr. Venezuela’s career has been her policy advocacy, which has been both assertive and bold. In her work with the public, in research, and as a leader, it has been her mission to ensure education systems are equitable and representational and inclusive.
Education in the coming years would revolve around socially-engaged scholarships and equity-oriented leadership. Against such a backdrop, the presentation of the Social Justice in Education Award 2026 to Dr. Angela Valenzuela is most timely and appropriate since throughout her life’s journey, she has continually challenged patriarchal structures, racism, discrimination, and oppression, either through activism or through scholarly engagement.
