Prof. Edward Frongillo has been named a 2026 Distinguished Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition, recognising his outstanding contributions to nutrition science.
Prof. Edward Frongillo has been named a Distinguished Fellow of the American Society for Nutrition (ASN) for 2026, receiving one of the most prestigious forms of academic recognition in the field of nutrition science. The University of South Carolina professor was recognized for a distinguished career spanning nutrition research, global public health, food security, and maternal and child health.
The American Society for Nutrition 2026 Distinguished Fellows class comprises 21 scientists whose careers have made significant contributions to nutrition. ASN describes the ASN Distinguished Fellow designation as the highest honor bestowed by the Society, recognizing significant contributions and outstanding lifetime achievements in nutrition.
Frongillo was inducted alongside the 2026 class during NUTRITION 2026, ASN’s annual flagship meeting, held in National Harbor, Maryland. The new class joins more than 500 scientists who have received Distinguished Fellow recognition since the program was established in 1952.
The Edward Frongillo award reflects decades of research addressing some of the most important challenges in global nutrition. Based at the University of South Carolina’s Arnold School of Public Health, Frongillo has built an international reputation through research focused on maternal and child nutrition, food security, child growth and global public health.
According to the University of South Carolina, Frongillo has published more than 550 peer-reviewed journal articles and has contributed to numerous grant-funded research projects. His work has also informed international initiatives involving child growth standards, food security measurement and evidence-based nutrition programs.
His influence extends beyond academic publications. Throughout his career, Frongillo has worked with and advised organizations and agencies including the World Health Organization, UNICEF, USAID and the USDA, while also mentoring more than 100 students and researchers.
The Distinguished Fellow 2026 recognition is the latest in a series of honors for Frongillo. The American Society for Nutrition Foundation previously selected him for the E.V. McCollum International Lectureship in Nutrition Award in 2020 and the Jean-Pierre Habicht Lifetime Achievements in Global Nutrition Research Award in 2022.
His latest honor further highlights the role of long-term research and international collaboration in advancing nutrition science and improving public health outcomes.
The Edward Frongillo Distinguished Fellowship comes at a time when food security, nutrition access and maternal and child health remain major priorities for researchers and policymakers worldwide. His career demonstrates how sustained nutrition research can contribute not only to scientific knowledge but also to policy development and practical public-health interventions.
