Prof. Ankit Agarwal of the Department of Hydrology at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee has been selected for the NASI Young Scientist Award 2026 by the National Academy of Sciences, India (NASI). The recognition highlights his contributions to hydrology, climate-related research and the study of extreme hydro-meteorological events.

Prof. Ankit Agarwal Recognised for Scientific Contributions

The NASI Young Scientist Award 2026 recognises scientific contributions and research leadership among emerging researchers. According to IIT Roorkee, the honour for Prof. Ankit Agarwal also includes a research incentive intended to support further scientific work.

Prof. Agarwal is an Associate Professor in the Department of Hydrology at IIT Roorkee. His research covers hydrometeorological extreme events, water and climate, hydrological modelling, impact-based modelling, and the use of big data and artificial intelligence or machine learning in hydrology.

Research at the Intersection of Hydrology and Climate Science

The work of Ankit Agarwal spans several areas that are increasingly important for understanding floods, droughts and other climate-related hazards. His research portfolio includes projects examining flood and drought vulnerability, compound dry and hot extremes, monsoon variability and hydrological forecasting.

One current research project led by Prof. Agarwal focuses on anomalous moisture transport and hydrological extremes under a changing climate. The project examines atmospheric processes associated with heavy precipitation events and their relevance to flood risk and disaster management.

His recent research also includes work on seasonal flood forecasting. A 2026 study published in the Journal of Hydrologic Engineering examined climate-informed approaches for forecasting flood quantiles in Indian catchments, with Prof. Agarwal among the authors.

Expanding Research on Natural Hazards

Natural hazard research is another important component of Prof. Agarwal's academic work. His IIT Roorkee profile lists research involving impact-based hydrological analysis, extreme hydroclimatic events, Western Disturbances, atmospheric rivers, moisture transport and data-driven flood forecasting.

A 2026 International Journal of Climatology paper involving Prof. Agarwal examined seasonal shifts and structural changes in Western Disturbances over the Hindu Kush Himalayas, highlighting the broader connection between atmospheric processes, precipitation and regional hydrology.

Recognition for Early-Career Research Excellence

The Ankit Agarwal award adds to his growing academic profile in hydrology and climate science. His career includes a PhD in Hydrology from the University of Potsdam, Germany, and research affiliations involving institutions in Germany alongside his work at IIT Roorkee.

The NASI Young Scientist Award 2026 also places attention on the role of early-career researchers in addressing complex scientific challenges involving water, climate variability and natural hazards.

The recognition comes as hydrology and climate research face increasing demands for better forecasting, modelling and risk assessment. For Prof. Ankit Agarwal, the NASI Young Scientist Award 2026 provides further recognition of research spanning hydrology, climate science, data-driven modelling and natural hazards, while the accompanying research incentive can support continued scientific investigation in these areas.
